How Well Must Surface Vorticity Be Organized for Tornadogenesis?

چکیده

Abstract This study investigates whether quasi-random surface vertical vorticity is sufficient for tornadogenesis when combined with an updraft typical of tornadic supercells. The viability this pathway could mean that a coherent process to produce well-organized rather unimportant. Highly idealized simulations are used establish random noise as possible seed the production tornado-like vortices (TLVs). A number sensitivities then examined across simulations. most explanatory predictor TLV will form (and how strong it become) maximal value initial circulation found near updraft. Perhaps surprisingly, often present even field lacks any obvious organized structure. other key ingredient formation confirmed be large gradient in velocity close ground (to promote stretching). Overall, appears indeed given adequate stretching. However, shown longer-wavelength more likely associated substantial (because areal integral vorticity). Thus, sources structures supportive tornadogenesis.

How complicated must an optical component be?

We analyze how complicated a linear optical component has to be if it is to perform one of a range of functions. Specifically, we devise an approach to evaluating the number of real parameters that must be specified in the device design or fabrication, based on the singular value decomposition of the linear operator that describes the device. This approach can be used for essentially any linear...

How unproportional must a graph be?

Let uk(G, p) be the maximum over all k-vertex graphs F of by how much the number of induced copies of F in G differs from its expectation in the Erdős-Rényi random graph with edge probability p. This may be viewed as a measure of how close G is to being p-quasirandom. Our main result is that, for fixed k ≥ 4 and 0 < p < 1, the minimum of uk(G, p) over n-vertex graphs has order of magnitude Θ(n ...

How Small Must Ill-distributed Sets Be?

Consider a set S ⊂ Z. Suppose that, for many primes p, the distribution of S in congruence classes mod p is far from uniform. How sparse is S forced to be thereby? A clear dichotomy appears: it seems that S must either be very small or possess much algebraic structure. We show that, if S ⊂ Z ∩ [0, N ] occupies few congruence classes mod p for many p, then either S has fewer than N elements or m...

How large must an iridotomy be?

Four cases of acute angle closure glaucoma in eyes with a small but patent Nd-YAG laser iridotomy are presented, and similar cases in the literature are reviewed. Theoretically a 15 microns diameter iridotomy should be large enough to prevent angle closure glaucoma due to pupil block. Mechanisms by which larger iridotomies fail to prevent angle closure glaucoma, and the role of provocation test...

How can vorticity be produced in irrotationally forced flows?

A spherical hydrodynamical expansion flow can be described as the gradient of a potential. In that case no vorticity should be produced, but several additional mechanisms can drive its production. Here we analyze the effects of baroclinicity, rotation and shear in the case of a viscous fluid. Those flows resemble what happens in the interstellar medium. In fact in this astrophysical environment...
